A friend once told me that one of her clearest memories of arriving at Cap Juluca was seeing a rider on horseback suddenly emerge from the turquoise waters of Maundays Bay.

Within minutes of stepping onto the property, the exact same thing happened to me.

Between the horse wading through the sea, the brilliant turquoise water, and the white Moorish arches lining the shore, the entire arrival felt cinematic. It was also an immediate reminder that Cap Juluca is one of those rare luxury resorts that looks even better in person than in photographs.

I spent time at Cap Juluca during a trip through Anguilla with my husband and son, touring the rooms, suites, villas, restaurants, pool, and Guerlain Spa, speaking with the hotel team, and dining on property. During the same trip, I compared it directly against Malliouhana (where we stayed) and Four Seasons Anguilla. I have since planned and booked multiple client stays here as well.

The short version: Cap Juluca is romantic, design-forward, and deeply peaceful, featuring one of the Caribbean’s finest beaches and the strongest resort spa in Anguilla. It isn't the right choice for every traveler, but for the right trip, it is nearly impossible to beat.First Impressions and Design

The first view of Maundays Bay from the lobby is one of those hotel arrivals that briefly silences everyone. White arches frame turquoise water, and the resort’s Moorish-inspired architecture follows the curve of the beach rather than fighting with it.

Arched passageways offer quick glimpses of the sea. Tiled courtyards create pockets of shade. White domes and walls look almost startling against the Caribbean blue.

For travelers who truly care about design, Cap Juluca would be my first choice in Anguilla. There are many beautiful Caribbean hotels that could theoretically have been built on almost any island. Cap Juluca feels specific. You know exactly where you are.

Malliouhana has more colorful Caribbean personality. Four Seasons has the most expansive resort setup. Cap Juluca is the one I would choose for someone who notices architecture, materials, symmetry and the way a building interacts with its surroundings.

It is romantic because of the beach, certainly, but also because nearly every part of the property feels considered.

Maundays Bay deserves its reputation. The sand is extraordinarily white, the water shifts through brilliant shades of turquoise and the crescent-shaped bay feels both grand and peaceful.

Cap Juluca’s white buildings follow the shoreline, so the beach feels cohesive rather than interrupted by one enormous hotel block. Many rooms sit only steps from the sand, which changes the daily rhythm of the stay. Going to the beach does not require assembling bags, shoes, hats and everyone’s remaining patience.

The property is also relatively flat. That makes Cap Juluca particularly appealing for travelers with mobility concerns, families who do not want every swim to become an expedition and couples whose ideal vacation involves moving between room and water with as little effort as possible.

During my July visit, part of Maundays Bay had seasonal sargassum while Meads Bay was completely clear. That is not a criticism of Cap Juluca. Sargassum moves throughout the Caribbean and can change by day, weather pattern and even location along the same stretch of coast.

Even with those seasonal conditions, it was easy to understand why travelers return to Maundays Bay. When the water is clear, it is one of the most beautiful beach settings in the Caribbean.

The Guerlain Spa

If Maundays Bay is the biggest reason to stay at Cap Juluca, the Guerlain Spa is the other.

Opened in June 2024, the spa feels less like an amenity tucked behind the hotel and more like its own destination. It has seven treatment rooms, a wellness suite, thermal facilities, plunge pools, an open-air studio and a rooftop infinity pool, all interpreted through the same Moorish design language as the rest of the property.

It was the strongest spa I toured in Anguilla and one of the most impressive resort spas I have seen in the Caribbean. The design is beautiful, but the real advantage is that the facilities make the time around a treatment feel worthwhile too.

I would not schedule a massage between lunch and dinner with exactly six minutes allotted to change clothes. Book the treatment, arrive early and leave room to use the facilities before or afterward. The hour surrounding the appointment is part of the point.

For a traveler who considers a massage a pleasant vacation extra, any of Anguilla’s top resorts can work. For someone planning the trip around spa time, Cap Juluca is the clear answer.

The Pool

Cap Juluca has a perfectly pleasant pool. It is also not the reason I would book the resort.

Compared with Malliouhana’s dramatic infinity pool or the multiple pool environments at Four Seasons, Cap Juluca’s pool is understated. That is not necessarily a weakness. Maundays Bay is directly outside, and the beach is so central to the experience that a large social pool would almost feel beside the point.

Do not choose Cap Juluca for the pool. Choose it for the beach, the architecture, the Guerlain Spa and the wonderful luxury of not needing to do very much at all.

Which room should you book at Cap Juluca?

This is where advisor help actually matters.

Cap Juluca’s rooms, suites and villas follow the curve of Maundays Bay. Some sit closer to the Main House, breakfast and the central restaurants. Others extend toward the quieter spa and Cap Shack end of the beach.

The accommodations have a much more direct relationship with the sand than they do at many Caribbean resorts. Still, exact placement changes the experience.

Ground floor or upper floor?

Ground-floor rooms offer the easiest connection to the beach. You can step outside and head toward the sand without stairs or passing through another part of the resort.

Upper-floor rooms generally offer a stronger view, greater privacy and more separation from the beach path below.

Neither is automatically better. I would usually choose ground floor for families, travelers with mobility concerns and anyone who cares most about effortless beach access. I would choose an upper floor for couples prioritizing privacy and the view.

Are the suites worth it?

The rooms I toured felt serene, spacious and consistent with the architecture of the resort. The interiors use a calm palette rather than competing with the water outside, while patios and terraces keep the room connected to the beach.

For most couples, the entry rooms are already generous enough, particularly if the plan is to spend most of the day outdoors. A suite becomes worth the difference when separate living space, an additional terrace or a private pool will meaningfully change how you use the room.

A plunge pool looks very persuasive on a booking page. Its actual value depends on privacy, sun exposure and the precise location of that particular accommodation.

What I would confirm before booking

Before booking Cap Juluca, I would want to know:

• whether the room is ground floor or upper floor

• its position along Maundays Bay

• the walking distance to the Main House and breakfast

• proximity to the spa, pool and restaurants

• privacy and sun exposure for private-pool categories

• the strongest connecting configuration for a family

• current beach conditions for a summer stay

The hotel website can tell you the square footage. It cannot tell you whether you will love the peaceful end of the bay or find yourself requesting a golf cart every time someone wants coffee.

That is the decision that changes the stay.

Dining at Cap Juluca

Cap Juluca has some of the most romantic resort dining settings in Anguilla, with enough variety that eating on property does not immediately become repetitive.

Pimms is the flagship and the obvious choice for an anniversary dinner. It sits close enough to Maundays Bay that you can hear the water, with open arches framing the sea and the sort of setting that makes an ordinary evening feel as though someone should be presenting jewelry.

Cip’s by Cipriani brings a little Venetian glamour to the Caribbean. It serves relaxed Italian food in an open-air waterfront setting and also handles breakfast, so it becomes part of the daily rhythm rather than simply another dinner reservation. The crayfish linguine is exactly the sort of thing one wants here: generous, indulgent and eaten while looking at water.

Uchu adds Peruvian flavors beside the pool, while the Cap Shack is the barefoot option at the quieter end of the beach. This is where I would order lunch after a swim, stay considerably longer than intended and quietly abandon whatever afternoon activity had seemed important that morning.

Every meal we had at Cap Juluca was beautifully presented and thoughtfully served. That said, I would not stay at any Anguilla resort and eat there exclusively. One of the pleasures of the island is exploring its independent restaurants and dining at the other hotels.

Cap Juluca may have the most romantic resort dining. The real winner is Anguilla itself.

Cap Juluca is my first choice among Anguilla’s three leading resorts for most honeymoons, anniversaries and romantic escapes. The combination of beachfront accommodations, Maundays Bay, the Guerlain Spa, Moorish architecture and quiet evenings gives the resort a natural sense of romance.

It does not need endless rose petals or a menu of scheduled “romantic experiences.” The setting already does most of the work.

Couples who want long beach days, spa time, leisurely meals and privacy are likely to be very happy here. Travelers looking for nightlife or a buzzy social scene may find it too quiet.

Malliouhana can be a better fit for couples who want a smaller resort with more energy and Caribbean personality. Four Seasons makes more sense for couples who want more restaurants, pools and activities. Cap Juluca is for couples who see slowing down as the purpose of the trip.

Is Cap Juluca good for families?

Yes, although it works best for a particular kind of family vacation.

The resort has a children’s club, connecting accommodations, larger suites, water sports and racquet sports. The flat beachfront layout is a genuine advantage. Families do not have to negotiate a hillside every time someone wants to swim, and the typically calm bay can feel more inviting to children than a beach with heavy surf.

I especially like Cap Juluca for families with school-aged or older children who enjoy swimming, paddleboarding, reading, tennis and long beach days. The resort largely assumes the beach is the activity.

In fairness, it has a very strong case.

For families with babies or toddlers, Four Seasons Anguilla is likely to feel easier because of its zero-entry pool, residences, broader children’s programming and wider range of dining and activities. For school-aged children who want a smaller and slightly more social resort, Malliouhana is another strong option.

Cap Juluca suits families who see the calm pace as part of the attraction. A child who requires a new scheduled activity every 45 minutes may have other opinions.

Is Cap Juluca worth it?

Cap Juluca is expensive, including by Anguilla standards. For the right traveler, the premium can absolutely make sense.

I would pay it for the combination of Maundays Bay, beachfront accommodations, the Guerlain Spa, distinctive architecture and the feeling that the resort itself is part of the reason for taking the trip.

I would be less inclined to pay it for someone who mainly wants a beautiful base from which to explore Anguilla and does not care deeply about spa, architecture or spending most of the day on this particular beach.

The correct way to assess the price is not simply to compare entry-room rates. Compare the room you would genuinely book, the preferred benefits available, what breakfast and hotel credits add, and whether the resort delivers the version of Anguilla you want.

The best value is not always the lowest rate. It is the hotel that delivers the vacation you were trying to have.

Getting to Cap Juluca

Many travelers fly into St. Maarten and continue to Anguilla by sea shuttle or private boat. Cap Juluca can coordinate the airport meeting, transfer to the dock and crossing to Anguilla, so the process does not have to involve arriving at St. Maarten with several confirmations and wondering which one applies to the boat.

Travelers who are prone to seasickness can consider flying directly into Anguilla when a practical schedule is available. From Anguilla’s airport, Cap Juluca is a relatively short drive.

For travelers with mobility concerns, I would prioritize a central ground-floor room close to the restaurants and facilities they expect to use most. The resort is relatively flat, but it stretches a considerable distance along the bay.

When to visit Cap Juluca

Winter and spring are Cap Juluca at its most polished, with the highest rates to match. Festive, Presidents’ Week and spring break should be planned well in advance, particularly if you want a specific beachfront position, connecting rooms or private-pool category.

Summer is quieter and can offer substantially better value. The same budget may buy a larger suite, private pool or longer stay. The tradeoffs are hurricane-season risk, reduced island activity and possible seasonal sargassum.

I particularly like early summer for travelers seeking better value without feeling that the island has fully shifted into off-season. Later in summer and fall, I would confirm restaurant schedules, programming and current beach conditions before booking.

Cap Juluca vs Four Seasons Anguilla vs Malliouhana

The useful question is not which Anguilla resort is universally best. It is which resort makes your preferred vacation easiest.

Choose Cap Juluca for romance, Maundays Bay, Guerlain Spa and a quiet pace. Choose Four Seasons Anguilla for families, multiple pools, residences, dining variety and the greatest accommodation flexibility. Choose Malliouhana for personality, smaller scale, a dramatic infinity pool and potentially stronger value depending on your dates.

Cap Juluca is the most romantic and visually cohesive. Four Seasons provides the most options. Malliouhana feels the most individual. None is the consolation prize. They simply suit different travelers.

My verdict

Would I book Cap Juluca? Absolutely, for the right trip.

If my husband and I were planning an anniversary or romantic escape, Cap Juluca would be at the top of my Anguilla list. The combination of Maundays Bay, Moorish architecture, beachfront rooms and the Guerlain Spa feels genuinely special. I would also happily come here with my school-aged son.

I would choose Four Seasons instead for a trip with babies, toddlers or several generations traveling together. I would choose Malliouhana for a smaller family trip or for couples who want a little more social energy.

Cap Juluca is not the universal answer. It is the answer for travelers who want exactly what it does best.
