Cheval Blanc Courchevel is the sort of hotel that makes skiing feel suspiciously easy.
Your boots are dealt with. Your skis are waiting. The piste is outside. You ski back in for lunch. Eventually you begin to wonder why anyone has ever carried their own skis anywhere.
This was the original Cheval Blanc, opened in 2006, and it remains one of the brand’s most intimate Maisons, with only 36 rooms and suites in the Jardin Alpin at Courchevel 1850. It is genuinely ski-in/ski-out, with direct access to Les Trois Vallées, plus a Guerlain spa, separate spaces for children and teenagers, more than 200 works of contemporary art and Courchevel’s only three-Michelin-starred restaurant.
It is extravagant. But what I like most is how good it is at the practical parts of a ski trip.
At this price, it should be.
Why Cheval Blanc Courchevel works so well
The hotel sits directly on the Jardin Alpin piste. There is no shuttle before skiing, no hauling equipment through town, and considerably less of the familiar 9 a.m. family conversation about where somebody’s other glove has gone.
The ski team handles equipment at slope level and gets you straight onto the mountain. For families, especially families with different ski abilities or children who may not want to ski from first lift until last, that convenience changes the whole week.
Courchevel has many exceptionally expensive hotels. Cheval Blanc earns its place on my shortlist because a meaningful amount of the irritating administration of skiing simply disappears.

Quelle chambre devriez-vous réserver ?
I would not choose here based on square footage alone.
Most rooms are already generous by European ski-hotel standards and include a balcony or terrace, dressing space, bathtub and separate hammam-style shower. The bigger distinctions are exposure, view and which rooms can connect.
For a couple, I would start with the Deluxe Superior Room. It is about 45 to 48 square meters, faces south toward La Saulire and has a private balcony or terrace.
If you are paying Courchevel prices to wake up in the Alps, I would like you to see the Alps.
For a longer stay, the Deluxe Junior Suite gives you more substantial living and dressing space. This begins to matter around day four, when ski clothes appear to have reproduced overnight.
For families, book the configuration, not the headcount
“Sleeps four” and “works beautifully for a family of four” are not remotely the same thing.
Certain Deluxe Superior Rooms and Junior Suites can connect through shared private entrances, while the Duplex Suite can connect with one or two additional rooms or suites. That means you can create a family setup with proper bedrooms and privacy rather than putting everyone into one impressive room and hoping nobody minds sleeping beside the sofa.
For younger children, I usually want everyone close. For teenagers, I still want everyone close, but preferably behind separate doors.
Cheval Blanc can do both.
The Chalet and The Apartment
For six guests, I would absolutely compare The Chalet with several separate suites.
The three-bedroom residence is 315 square meters across four floors, with a fireplace, dining room, screening room, private treatment room, sauna, hammam and outdoor Nordic bath. You have the privacy of a chalet while keeping Cheval Blanc’s restaurants, spa, kids club and ski service immediately available.
In other words, you get the house.
Someone else still handles breakfast.
For up to eight guests, The Apartment takes things considerably further. It spans 650 square meters with four bedrooms, three reception rooms, a private kitchen and bar, wellness space, round-the-clock Majordome service and its own lift to a private ski room.
This is why I would price the actual family configurations before automatically reserving four rooms.

And then there is The Apartment

It is genuinely excellent with children
Cheval Blanc does family travel without making the entire hotel feel like a children’s resort.
Le Carrousel is the dedicated children’s space, while Le Paddock gives teenagers their own lounge with games and a screening room. Both currently operate daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
I particularly like that teenagers have somewhere of their own. An eight-year-old and a fifteen-year-old should not be expected to enjoy the same kids club simply because they share parents.
It also means parents can actually ski together, have lunch together or spend an afternoon at the spa, rather than simply taking turns being off duty.
That is an underrated luxury on a family vacation.
The skiing
This is where Cheval Blanc becomes particularly compelling.
The Maison sits directly in Le Jardin Alpin in Courchevel 1850 with ski-in/ski-out access to Les Trois Vallées, which encompasses close to 600 kilometers of pistes.
For beginners, the Jardin Alpin area provides gentle skiing near the hotel, while stronger skiers can quickly connect deeper into Courchevel and the wider Three Valleys network. Condé Nast specifically notes that the hotel works well for beginners accessing the green runs while also giving intermediate and advanced skiers straightforward access to the broader terrain.
This matters for families with mixed abilities.
Nobody wants to spend €4,000 a night at a ski hotel and then discover that half the family needs a 25-minute shuttle before the skiing even begins.
Here, you are already there.
That combination, real terrain for strong skiers and gentle runs by the hotel, is what I look for in the best ski resorts for families.
The ski room may ruin other ski hotels for you
The staff prepare and handle equipment at slope level before sending you directly onto the Jardin Alpin piste.
This sounds like a small thing until you have spent a week moving several helmets, poles, skis and boots around Europe.
Ski boots are among life’s least elegant objects. Anything that reduces the amount of time I spend clomping around in them has my full support.
What happens after skiing is nearly as important
The Guerlain spa has five treatment rooms, a couples salon, a pool overlooking the slopes, sauna, hammam, whirlpool, ice fountains and an outdoor Russian banya. This is a proper mountain spa, not three massage rooms installed because luxury hotels are apparently contractually required to have them.
My preferred schedule is fairly straightforward: ski, lunch, ski a little more if virtue demands it, Guerlain.
The indoor pool also makes Cheval Blanc especially useful for families. Children can somehow ski for six hours and then ask to swim.
No adult understands this.
But at least here the answer can be yes.
It also holds up against the best hotel spas in France, which is not something I say about most mountain spas.
I would book something late afternoon.

And then there is the food
Le 1947 by Yannick Alléno holds three Michelin stars and is the only three-star restaurant in Courchevel. It is also tiny, with roughly 22 seats, so this is not the dinner reservation I would leave until you arrive.
Fortunately, every evening does not require a tasting menu. Le Grill Alpin is the more relaxed all-day option, while La Terrasse sits directly beside the Jardin Alpin piste and is exactly where I would linger over lunch on a sunny day.
The only problem with lunch at La Terrasse is deciding whether you are still skiing afterward.

Cheval Blanc, Airelles or L’Apogée?
Keep this comparison simple.
I would lean Cheval Blanc for someone who wants a small, design-forward hotel, extremely polished service, excellent ski logistics and a quieter atmosphere.
I would lean Airelles for a family wanting the most theatrical, elaborate hotel experience and major children’s programming.
I would look closely at L’Apogée when multi-bedroom suites and family accommodation are driving the decision.
They are all exceptional. They simply create different ski weeks.
Who I would book Cheval Blanc Courchevel for
I particularly like it for families who want skiing to feel genuinely easy, couples who care as much about the hotel as the mountain, food-focused travelers, families with teenagers and multigenerational groups who can use The Chalet or The Apartment.
I would look elsewhere for someone who wants to walk directly into the center of Courchevel every evening, prefers very traditional Alpine interiors, or intends to leave at first lift and return at midnight.
You are paying for the ski service, the spa, the restaurants, the children’s spaces and the extraordinary level of attention.
Use them.
How long should you stay?
For an American family coming specifically to ski, I like six or seven nights. Four can work if Courchevel is part of a larger winter trip, but the journey and ski logistics make a full week much more satisfying.
During Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Week and February school holidays, I would book early. The hotel may still show availability long after the connecting configuration your family actually needs has disappeared.
