Technically yes, but it is not in Zermatt village.
Riffelalp sits high above town at 2,222 meters and is accessible by the Gornergrat Railway. Once you arrive, you are surrounded by mountains rather than shops, restaurants and village streets.
That is precisely the appeal, but it also means Riffelalp and a hotel in central Zermatt create very different vacations.
How do you get to Riffelalp Resort 2222m?
This is the most important thing to understand before booking.
You first travel to car-free Zermatt. From there, you take the Gornergrat Railway up the mountain to Riffelalp station. The hotel can arrange for a porter to meet you in Zermatt and assist with your luggage.
In summer, the charming Riffelalp tram takes guests from the railway station to the hotel. In winter, luggage is transported by electric skidoo while guests make the short walk through the snowy forest.
The arrival is slightly more involved than pulling up to a hotel entrance in a taxi. It is also considerably more memorable.
Can you drive to Riffelalp Resort?
No.
Zermatt itself is car-free, and Riffelalp is only accessible via the Gornergrat Railway.
If you are driving through Switzerland, you leave your car in Täsch before continuing to Zermatt by train. The hotel can assist with parking arrangements and your onward journey.
Once you arrive at Riffelalp, there is very little reason to miss the car.
Is Riffelalp Resort ski-in/ski-out?
Yes. In winter, Riffelalp is genuinely ski-in/ski-out and sits directly within the Zermatt ski area.
The hotel also has a dedicated ski room with private equipment lockers, and its mountain guide offers a winter program that can include skiing, snowshoeing and other alpine experiences.
For a ski-focused Zermatt trip, the location is exceptionally convenient. Instead of beginning your morning by walking through town in ski boots and getting on a lift, you wake up already on the mountain.
Is Riffelalp better than staying in Zermatt village?
It depends entirely on the trip you want.
I would choose Riffelalp if skiing, hiking, Matterhorn views and being surrounded by nature are the priority.
I would stay in Zermatt village if you want to walk to lots of restaurants, shop, have après-ski drinks around town and enjoy the energy of the village every evening.
For longer stays, I also love the idea of combining the two. Spend a few nights in Zermatt village and then move up to Riffelalp once you are ready for the mountains to take over.
Can you go into Zermatt for dinner while staying at Riffelalp?
You can, but I would not plan to do it every night.
The Gornergrat Railway is the only connection between Riffelalp and Zermatt, so evening plans need to work around the train schedule. There are later trains, but this is not a hotel where you casually wander into town for dinner and grab a taxi home whenever you feel like it.
Fortunately, Riffelalp has several dining options of its own.
If exploring Zermatt's restaurant scene is a major part of your trip, I would either split your stay or choose a village hotel.
Does Riffelalp have Matterhorn views?
Yes, and they are a major reason to stay here.
The resort sits directly across from the Matterhorn at 2,222 meters, and most of its rooms have balconies with mountain views. Its suites also have balconies facing the surrounding alpine scenery.
There are plenty of hotels in Zermatt where you can see the Matterhorn.
Riffelalp feels like you are living with it.
What are the best rooms at Riffelalp Resort?
I would prioritize a Matterhorn-facing room with a balcony.
Riffelalp has 65 rooms and five suites, and while even the simpler rooms benefit from the hotel's extraordinary location, the view is worth considering carefully here.
For families or longer stays, the resort also has larger apartments in the Alpenresidenz Augstkumme, located about 100 meters from the main hotel.
This is one of those hotels where I would choose the right orientation before automatically choosing the largest room.
Does Riffelalp Resort have an outdoor pool?
Yes, and it is spectacular.
The outdoor pool at Spa 2222m is heated to approximately 35°C, or 95°F, and looks directly toward the Matterhorn. The resort describes it as Europe's highest outdoor pool.
There is also a larger indoor pool heated to approximately 30°C, plus saunas, a steam bath, whirlpool and treatment rooms.
Floating outside at 2,222 meters while staring at the Matterhorn is one of those hotel experiences that does not require much additional marketing.
Is the Riffelalp outdoor pool open in winter?
Oui.
The outdoor pool is heated throughout the winter season, making it particularly appealing after skiing.
There are few things I enjoy more in a ski hotel than the ability to go directly from ski boots to a very warm pool while someone else worries about dinner.
Is Riffelalp Resort good for families?
Very, particularly for families who ski.
During winter, Riffelalp offers a supervised children's program, a game room, indoor pool and direct access to the slopes. There are also larger accommodations for families who need more space.
What makes it especially easy is the ski-in/ski-out location. Once everyone is dressed, you are already on the mountain.
For a family with children who are skiing every day, eliminating the daily commute to the lifts is not a small luxury.
Is Riffelalp Resort good with young children?
It can be, although I would think about the logistics and what you want to do each day.
The hotel offers a supervised children's program during winter, along with family-friendly facilities including the indoor pool and game room.
If your plan is primarily skiing and enjoying the resort, Riffelalp can be wonderfully easy.
If you expect to spend every afternoon shopping, eating and exploring Zermatt village with a stroller, I would rather keep you in town.
Is Riffelalp Resort good for a honeymoon?
Très.
Few Zermatt hotels feel as removed from ordinary life. You arrive by mountain railway, wake up to the Matterhorn, ski or hike directly from the hotel and finish the afternoon in a heated outdoor pool at 2,222 meters.
I especially like Riffelalp for honeymooners who want Switzerland to feel romantic and outdoorsy rather than centered entirely around restaurants and shopping.
A few nights here paired with another Swiss destination makes an excellent honeymoon combination.
Is Riffelalp Resort good in summer?
Absolutely. I would not think of Riffelalp only as a ski hotel.
Summer puts you directly into Zermatt's hiking network, with trails beginning around the hotel and easy access to the Gornergrat Railway. The resort also offers guided hiking and mountain experiences during the summer season.
And then there is the small matter of swimming outside beneath the Matterhorn.
For hikers, summer may actually be when Riffelalp's location makes the most sense.
Riffelalp Resort in summer or winter: which is better?
Winter is better if your priority is skiing. The ski-in/ski-out access is difficult to beat.
Summer is better if you want hiking, long days outside and a quieter alpine retreat without needing to ski at all.
The personality changes with the seasons, but the reason for staying remains essentially the same: you are sleeping in the mountains rather than commuting to them.
How many nights should you stay at Riffelalp?
For most travelers, I like three nights.
Two nights can work as part of a larger Swiss itinerary, particularly in summer. During ski season, I would happily stay longer because the location makes skiing so easy.
If it is your first trip to Zermatt and you also want restaurants, shopping and village atmosphere, I might split the stay between Riffelalp and a hotel in town.
If you have already seen Zermatt and simply want to ski, eat, swim and stare at the Matterhorn, staying entirely at Riffelalp becomes very tempting.
Is 2,222 meters very high?
It is high enough that the setting feels genuinely alpine.
Riffelalp sits at 2,222 meters, or roughly 7,290 feet, above sea level. That altitude is part of what creates the views, snow access and sense of being removed from Zermatt below.
Travelers who know they are particularly sensitive to altitude should simply factor the elevation into their plans when deciding whether Riffelalp is the right hotel.
Is breakfast included at Riffelalp Resort?
Breakfast is included in many of the hotel's published room rates, and the breakfast buffet is reserved exclusively for overnight guests.
I particularly appreciate breakfast here because there is very little temptation to rush off in search of somewhere else.
The Matterhorn is outside. The skiing is outside. Have another coffee.
Can you visit Riffelalp Resort without staying there?
You can reach Riffelalp using the Gornergrat Railway and dine at certain hotel restaurants depending on opening hours and availability.
However, several of the resort's most appealing amenities, including Spa 2222m and its outdoor Matterhorn-view pool, are reserved for hotel guests.
