I especially like it for families, active couples and anyone who wants Hawaii to involve more than moving between a pool chair and a dinner reservation.
Is The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay the old Turtle Bay Resort?
Yes. The longtime Turtle Bay Resort officially became The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay in 2024.
The property had already undergone an extensive renovation before the Ritz-Carlton rebrand, including updates to the guest rooms, lobby, pools, spa and restaurants.
So if you stayed at Turtle Bay years ago, the location may be familiar, but the current resort is a considerably more polished version of it.
Where is The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay?
The resort is on O‘ahu's North Shore in Kahuku, far from the high-rise hotels and busy streets of Waikiki.
That location is one of the main reasons to stay here. You are close to famous North Shore surf breaks, Waimea Valley, Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline and the Polynesian Cultural Center, while still having a full luxury resort to come back to.
It feels like a very different version of O‘ahu.
How far is Turtle Bay from Honolulu Airport?
The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay is approximately 37.5 miles from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
I would generally allow about an hour to an hour and a half for the drive, depending heavily on traffic. North Shore traffic can be unpredictable, particularly around weekends, holidays and major surf events.
This is not the hotel where I would cut an airport transfer particularly close.
Is Turtle Bay too far from Waikiki?
Not if you choose it because you want the North Shore.
Waikiki is roughly an hour away in good traffic, so I would not stay at Turtle Bay if your plan is to have dinner in Honolulu every night.
I prefer to treat the North Shore as its own destination. If you want significant time in Waikiki as well, splitting the stay between the two areas often makes much more sense than spending your vacation driving back and forth across O‘ahu.
Does The Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay have a good beach?
Yes, and the variety of beaches is one of the resort's biggest strengths.
There are seven beaches within walking distance of the resort. Kuilima Cove is directly beside the hotel and is a popular place for swimming and snorkeling, while protected Kawela Bay is particularly beautiful for kayaking and exploring.
Ocean conditions on the North Shore can change dramatically, especially during winter surf season, so I would always pay attention to local conditions rather than assuming every beach will be calm every day.
Can you swim at Turtle Bay?
Oui.
Guests can swim and snorkel at beaches around the property, and protected areas such as Kuilima Cove and Kawela Bay can offer gentler conditions than the famous open-ocean surf breaks farther along the North Shore.
The resort also has multiple pools, including a family pool, an adults-only pool and a children's pool with water slides.
If you are traveling with young children, that combination is particularly useful when the ocean decides to remind everyone that it is, in fact, the Pacific.
Is The Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay good for families?

There is a large family pool, a Keiki Pool with two water slides, beaches, snorkeling, bicycles, tennis, pickleball, horseback riding, surf lessons and an enormous amount of outdoor space.
The North Shore location also gives families easy access to places like Waimea Valley and the Polynesian Cultural Center.
I particularly like Turtle Bay for families with school-age children and teenagers because there is enough to do that the trip does not depend entirely on the kids' club.
Is Turtle Bay good with teenagers?
Extremely.
Teenagers can surf, snorkel, ride horses, bike the trails, play tennis or pickleball and explore the beaches. The resort offers dozens of organized experiences, including surf instruction and ocean activities.
This is one of the O‘ahu resorts I would look at first for an active family with older children who might become deeply offended by the suggestion of spending seven consecutive days beside the kiddie pool.
What are the best rooms at The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay?
One nice thing about Turtle Bay is that all of the hotel's guest rooms have ocean views.
The bigger decision is whether to stay in the main resort, upgrade to a Club-level room or suite, or splurge on one of the Ocean Bungalows.
For most travelers, I would prioritize the best view and room layout within the main hotel.
For a honeymoon, anniversary or particularly special trip, the Ocean Bungalows are the category I would look at closely.
Are the Ocean Bungalows at Turtle Bay worth it?
They can be.
There are 42 Ocean Bungalows set apart from the main resort, directly along the shoreline. They are approximately 740 square feet and include large lanais, direct beach access and access to a private infinity-style pool reserved for bungalow guests.
They also come with dedicated host service and additional included experiences.
For a couple who wants privacy, or a family willing to pay substantially more for space and location, they are one of the most compelling ways to stay at Turtle Bay.
Is Ritz-Carlton Club access worth it at Turtle Bay?
It can be, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time at the resort.
The Ritz-Carlton Club includes access to a private oceanfront lounge with multiple food and beverage presentations throughout the day, dedicated concierge service and additional activities.
For families who might otherwise buy breakfast, snacks and drinks throughout the day, the math can become surprisingly persuasive.
It is less necessary if you plan to be out exploring the North Shore from breakfast until dinner.
Is Turtle Bay good for a honeymoon?
Yes, particularly for couples who want an active honeymoon.
There are beautiful oceanfront rooms and bungalows, an adults-only pool, Nalu Spa, excellent sunsets, horseback riding, surfing, hiking and private dining experiences.
I would choose Turtle Bay over Waikiki for honeymooners who want nature, space and a stronger sense of escape.
If your honeymoon priority is shopping, nightlife and walking to restaurants, I would look elsewhere on O‘ahu.
Is Turtle Bay good for surfing?
Très.
The North Shore is one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world, and the resort offers surf instruction through the Jamie O'Brien Surf Experience.
Beginners do not need to throw themselves into Pipeline to participate. Lessons can be tailored to experience level and ocean conditions.
Experienced surfers, meanwhile, are staying within a few miles of some of the most famous breaks on the planet.
When is the best time to stay at Turtle Bay?
It depends on what kind of North Shore you want.
Winter is legendary for enormous surf and watching some of the world's best surfers, but ocean conditions can be much rougher.
Summer generally brings calmer North Shore water, which can make it particularly appealing for families interested in swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.
There really is no bad season, but a December Turtle Bay trip and a June Turtle Bay trip can feel surprisingly different.
Is The Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay good for golfers?
Oui.
Turtle Bay has an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, set among the resort's dramatic North Shore landscape.
It is a particularly useful resort for couples or families where one person wants legitimate golf and everyone else would prefer to be surfing, riding horses, going to the spa or doing almost anything involving the ocean.
Do you need a rental car at Turtle Bay?
I usually think having a car is useful here.
You can easily spend several days entirely within the resort, but part of the appeal of staying on the North Shore is exploring beyond it. Sunset Beach, Pipeline, Waimea Valley, Haleiwa and the shrimp trucks around Kahuku are all easy additions to the trip.
If you have no intention of leaving the resort, private airport transfers are perfectly reasonable.
If you want to explore, I would rent a car.
Is Turtle Bay a good place to stay for exploring the North Shore?
It is probably the easiest luxury base for doing exactly that.
Sunset Beach and Banzai Pipeline are only a few miles away, Waimea Valley is farther along the coast, and Haleiwa is easy to visit for shopping, food and a change of pace.
You can spend the day exploring and still come home to a proper resort with a spa, multiple pools and room service.
That is a combination I find rather persuasive.
Turtle Bay or Waikiki: which is better?
They are almost completely different trips.
Choose Turtle Bay if you want beaches, nature, surfing, hiking, golf and a quieter resort environment.
Choose Waikiki if you want restaurants, shopping, nightlife, city energy and the ability to walk out of your hotel and immediately have dozens of things around you.
For a longer first trip to O‘ahu, I often like the idea of combining the two rather than forcing yourself to choose.
Turtle Bay or Ko Olina: which is better for families?
I would choose Turtle Bay for families that want nature, surfing, outdoor adventures and access to the North Shore.
I would choose Ko Olina for families who prioritize calm man-made lagoons, predictable swimming conditions and a more contained resort environment.
Turtle Bay feels more adventurous and distinctly North Shore. Ko Olina feels easier and more manicured.
The better choice depends largely on whether your family considers a little adventure part of the vacation or something to recover from afterward.
