Château Saint-Martin is for the person who wants the South of France but would rather look at the Côte d’Azur from a beautiful hillside than participate in it every waking minute.
Set above Vence on 34 acres of olive trees, gardens and cypress, the hotel feels much more Provençal than coastal. There are only 47 rooms, suites and villas, plus an infinity pool overlooking the Riviera and a La Prairie spa. You can spend the morning in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, have lunch beneath olive trees and decide by mid-afternoon that Cannes can wait until tomorrow.
I particularly like it for couples, multigenerational families and anyone who has already discovered that the South of France is considerably more interesting than its beach clubs.

- The Duplex Suite occupies the original tower over two floors, with a narrow original staircase and no elevator. Romantic for some, difficult for others. Never book this one from photographs
- Pour les familles
- The Two-Bedroom Villa, approx. 1,937 sq ft for up to five, with a full kitchen. The Three-Bedroom Villa adds a private pool and is one of the strongest villa options on the Riviera
- Villa logistics
- The villas sit across the road from the main hotel, with dedicated transport between the two. Perfect separation for some families, an unnecessary step for others
- No beach
- An infinity pool in the gardens above the Riviera, and no beach club. The coast is about 30 minutes away. If sand matters, compare Royal-Riviera
- Spa
- Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie: four treatment rooms including a couples’ room, sauna, hammam, hot tub and garden cabanas, plus tennis and padel
- Dining
- Le Saint-Martin under Executive Chef Romain Antoine, and L’Oliveraie beneath the olive trees in summer. Note that Le Saint-Martin does not currently hold a Michelin star, whatever older articles say
- Kids’ club
- Seasonal, July and August, afternoons except Wednesdays. Good for school-age children and up, not an all-day programme

That is exactly the kind of thing you cannot see in a photograph, and this is a hotel where the highest category is often not the right one. Send me your dates and who is traveling and I will tell you which suite or villa actually fits.
The room advice matters here
This is not a hotel where I would simply book the highest category available.
For couples, L’Atelier Junior Suite may actually be my favorite. It was added in 2024 and feels more private and contemporary than many of the traditional rooms, with a large terrace, hammam shower and an outdoor stone shower looking over the Provençal hills. For a honeymoon or anniversary, I would start here.
The Deluxe and Prestige Junior Suites are more traditional, and I would pay close attention to the view. Prestige has some of the best outlooks across the hills toward the Mediterranean, while Deluxe gives you generous terraces. At this hotel, I would happily prioritize the view over a few more square feet.
And then there is the Duplex Suite.
It occupies the château’s original tower, looks wonderfully romantic in photographs and comes with one rather important detail: a narrow original staircase connecting the two floors and no elevator.
For the right couple, charming. For someone with a bad knee, considerably less charming.
This is precisely why I do not like booking luxury hotels from room photographs alone.
For families, I would look at the villas first
The villas are where Château Saint-Martin becomes particularly interesting.
The Two-Bedroom Villa is nearly 2,000 square feet with two bedrooms, a full kitchen and proper living and dining space for up to five guests. It is the sort of setup where everyone can unpack, children can go to bed, and the adults do not have to spend the rest of the evening whispering in the dark.
For a larger family or multigenerational trip, I would go straight to the Three-Bedroom Villa. You get three bedrooms, large terraces and your own pool while keeping the château’s restaurants, spa and hotel service.
There is one logistical detail I would want to know before booking: the villas sit across the road from the main hotel, with dedicated hotel transportation between them. Some families will love the extra privacy. Others will prefer being inside the château where coming down for breakfast requires fewer moving parts.
Neither is better. They are simply different vacations.
Six private villas sit on the hillside above the château, each with its own pool. This is the category for a family or two couples who want the estate without the corridor.
It works very well with children, but it is not a family resort
Château Saint-Martin has seasonal children’s programming in July and August, plus tennis, outdoor space and babysitting that can be arranged. I like it most for school-age children and older, particularly families who want to explore during part of the day and come back to a beautiful hotel rather than spend the entire vacation inside a kids club.
If elaborate all-day programming is essential, I would choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat instead.
If you want children happily occupied for a few hours while you and your husband have lunch together or go to the spa, then everyone comes back together later, Château Saint-Martin is much more my speed.
The absence of a beach is the point
There is no beach club here.
Instead, there is an infinity pool set among gardens high above the Riviera, surrounded by olive, eucalyptus and cypress trees.
If your fantasy involves waking up and immediately swimming in the Mediterranean, stay on the coast. Royal-Riviera is the hotel I would compare if a proper sandy beach matters.
But if the idea of looking down at the Côte d’Azur from a quiet pool sounds more appealing than being in the middle of it, you are in the right place.
The spa and location make slower days very easy
Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie has four treatment rooms, including a couples room, plus a sauna, hammam, hot tub and outdoor garden treatment cabanas. There is also tennis and padel for anyone who has made different promises to themselves about vacation exercise.
The location is equally good for the artistic side of the Riviera. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Fondation Maeght, Vence and Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire are all nearby, with Nice, Antibes and the coast easy enough when you want them.
That is what I like about staying here. You can actually see something other than a beach club and still be back beside the pool by late afternoon.
The indoor room matters in April and October, when the terrace turns cold by the second course.
Le Saint-Martin is the hotel’s signature restaurant, now led by Executive Chef Romain Antoine. The menu focuses on Provençal and Riviera ingredients, with much of the inspiration coming from local producers and the surrounding landscape.
One useful update: I would not currently describe it as Michelin-starred. Older articles still do, but the current Michelin Guide lists the restaurant without a star. This is exactly why hotel pages need updating more often than anyone would like to admit.
L’Oliveraie
In summer, L’Oliveraie is where I would want to eat. Tables sit beneath centuries-old olive trees, and the menu is much more relaxed, built around vegetables, herbs and Mediterranean dishes. For 2026, it operates seasonally during the summer months. This is the lunch that becomes three hours without anyone particularly noticing.
Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the location
Château Saint-Martin is in Vence, in the hills above the Côte d’Azur. Nice Airport is roughly 40 minutes away, and Nice and Cannes are each around 40 minutes by car depending on traffic.
The location makes particular sense if you are interested in the artistic side of the Riviera. Nearby, I would prioritize Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Fondation Maeght, Vence, Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Nice and Antibes, plus a day along the coast when you want one. It is also one of the reasons this hotel works so well inside a wider South of France itinerary.
The hotel has also introduced new Hidden Riviera experiences for 2026, including private art and cultural experiences designed around the surrounding villages and Provençal landscape. This is where Château Saint-Martin has an advantage over the major seaside hotels. You are not simply visiting the Côte d’Azur. You are also very close to the part of Provence that inspired Matisse, Picasso and Chagall.
Who I would book Château Saint-Martin for
Couples who want quiet and romance. Families who need actual space. Multigenerational trips where a villa solves the accommodation problem. Art lovers. And travelers doing a longer South of France trip who want a completely different second stop after several nights on the coast.
I would choose somewhere else if nightlife, walkability or direct access to the Mediterranean are priorities. You are not walking out after dinner to see what is happening in town.
Again, that is the point.
Three or four nights works beautifully as part of a larger Riviera itinerary. I particularly like the idea of starting on the coast, then moving here when everyone is ready for the volume to come down. Château Saint-Martin vs. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc
These are even more different. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is iconic, glamorous and social, with one of the most famous seaside settings in Europe. Château Saint-Martin is quieter, smaller and much more connected to Provence than to the Riviera scene.
Choose Eden-Roc because you want Eden-Roc. Choose Château Saint-Martin because you would rather look at the Côte d’Azur from a distance and visit it when you feel like it.
Pairing Vence with the rest of France
This hotel is at its best as the second half of a trip. On the coast, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and Royal-Riviera are the two I pair it with most often, and Le Mas Candille is the other inland option, closer to Cannes. Further west, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the beachfront Maison worth comparing.
For Provence proper, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide takes the same idea considerably further inland, and for a few nights either side in the capital, the Paris Palace hotels are where I would start.
