Royal-Riviera is one of the easiest luxury hotels to recommend on this part of the French Riviera. It sits at the entrance to the Cap-Ferrat peninsula, between Nice and Monaco, with Mediterranean gardens, a heated pool and its own private seasonal beach just below the hotel.
The appeal is not that it is the grandest hotel on the Côte d’Azur. It is that it is wonderfully easy. You can walk to the beach, walk into Beaulieu-sur-Mer, visit Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, and be in Monaco or Nice without making every outing feel like a minor military operation.
For travelers who want a classic Riviera setting without the formality or scale of a palace hotel, Royal-Riviera is a very smart choice.

Sea view in the main building, or space and quiet in L’Orangerie. For a family, that is usually not a close call.

Why stay at Royal-Riviera?
Royal-Riviera is smaller and more relaxed than many of the famous Riviera hotels nearby. There are 94 rooms and suites split between the main Belle Époque building and L’Orangerie, a quieter Provençal-style building tucked into the gardens.
The hotel also has something surprisingly uncommon on this stretch of coastline: a private sandy beach. That alone makes it particularly appealing for families and anyone who has arrived on the Mediterranean with every intention of actually swimming in it.
The private beach
One of very few hotels on the peninsula with its own sandy beach, and it runs roughly mid-May to end of September. Outside those months the pool is the swim.
Royal-Riviera is the hotel I would choose when you want the French Riviera to be beautiful without requiring quite so much effort.
It sits at the entrance to Cap-Ferrat, between Nice and Monaco, with Mediterranean gardens, a heated pool and something genuinely unusual on this part of the coast: its own private sandy beach. You can walk into Beaulieu-sur-Mer, visit Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, take the train, or spend the afternoon by the water without first assembling a transportation strategy.
The beach is a bigger deal than it sounds
Much of the coastline around Cap-Ferrat is rocky, so being able to walk downstairs and put your feet in actual sand is not something I would casually dismiss as “beach access.”
Royal-Riviera’s private beach is reserved for hotel guests and operates seasonally, roughly from mid-May through September. You can move between the Mediterranean, lunch and the heated pool without getting into a car or reserving a beach club three weeks earlier. On the Riviera, this qualifies as extremely civilized.
Main building or L’Orangerie?
This is the decision I would make before worrying about almost anything else.
Couples should usually start in the main Belle Époque building, particularly with a Deluxe Sea and Garden View room or Junior Suite Sea View. Some have balconies, and this is where you get the classic Riviera outlook.
Families should look very carefully at L’Orangerie. It is quieter and more residential, and the larger suites have separate living rooms and connecting options. A spectacular sea view is lovely. Being able to put your child to bed and remain awake yourself is also lovely.
For a family, I would usually choose the latter.
Ninety-four rooms in total, and only 58 in the main building have the sea and garden view. Ask for the view by name; it is not the default.
Why it works so well with children
Royal-Riviera does not have an enormous kids club, which will either matter very much or not at all.
What it does have is a sandy beach, heated pool, manageable size and family-friendly accommodations. You are not calling for a buggy because someone left goggles in the room, nor does getting from breakfast to the beach constitute the morning’s primary activity.
For families wanting elaborate children’s programming, I would choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat instead. For a family that plans to swim, explore and actually spend time together, Royal-Riviera can be the easier choice.
The building dates to 1904 and the hotel closes for about seven weeks between mid-November and mid-January.
The location may be its best feature
Beaulieu-sur-Mer is next door, Villa Ephrussi is nearby, Nice and Monaco are both easy, and the Beaulieu train station is within walking distance. You can see a considerable amount of the Côte d’Azur without packing your suitcase every 48 hours, which is how I prefer to plan this part of France.
You are also not dependent on the hotel for every meal. La Table du Royal handles the more refined dinner, Jasmin Grill & Lounge is the easier poolside option, and Beaulieu gives you somewhere to wander for everything else.
La Table du Royal runs April to October; Jasmin Grill & Lounge is the seasonal poolside room facing Villa Kérylos. Confirm which is open before promising a terrace dinner.
Royal-Riviera or Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat?
These hotels are neighbors, but they solve different problems.
Choose Royal-Riviera for the sandy beach, walkability, smaller scale and easy access to the rest of the Riviera.
Choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat for the full Four Seasons experience, Club Dauphin, the larger spa, private-pool suites and stronger children’s programming.
For a family obsessed with the beach, I would lean Royal-Riviera. For a family planning to spend most of the week inside the resort, I would lean Four Seasons.
Who I would book here
Couples, families and first-time Riviera visitors who want a beautiful hotel but also intend to leave it occasionally.
Royal-Riviera gets the important things right without making a great production out of them. There is a private beach, a heated pool, good rooms, somewhere pleasant to eat and a location from which you can actually go places.
You can spend all day at the hotel and feel like you are on vacation.
You can also walk out the door.
On the French Riviera, I consider both valuable.
When to stay
The beach operates seasonally, so late spring through early fall is the window if swimming from the hotel is part of why you are booking. June and September are my favorites for couples, while families traveling during school holidays will be looking at July and August, which is worth planning early.
Pairing Cap-Ferrat with the rest of France
Very few clients come to the Riviera and stay in one place. Inland, Le Mas Candille is the Mougins counterpart I pair it with most often, and Château Saint-Martin & Spa sits above Vence. Further west, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the beachfront Maison worth comparing.
For Provence proper, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide is my first suggestion, and for a few nights either side in the capital, the Paris Palace hotels are where I would start.
