Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat is the Riviera hotel I would choose when you want an old European palace but would prefer the actual vacation to be very easy.

The white 1908 hotel sits on 17 acres at the tip of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, close enough to Nice, Èze and Monaco that you can make plans, but beautiful enough that you may immediately lose interest in keeping them. There are only 75 rooms, suites and villas, a legendary seawater pool below the cliffs, clay tennis courts, a serious spa and enough happening on the property that spending an entire afternoon accomplishing nothing feels entirely defensible.

That is really the appeal. You can go to Èze in the morning, come back for a very long lunch at Club Dauphin, play tennis or disappear into the spa, and still be sitting outside looking at the Mediterranean before dinner. The hotel gives you an excellent base for exploring the Riviera while also making a convincing case for not exploring it quite so aggressively.

No sand

The coastline is rocky. This is a pool-and-coves hotel. If sand is essential, compare Royal-Riviera

Indoor counter-current lap pool, hydrotherapy, glass treatment cabanas in the gardens, an outdoor gym over the sea, two clay tennis courts and coached open-water swimming

The Sea Explorers Kids Club was rebuilt in 2025, outdoors under the pines near Club Dauphin, without changing the character of the hotel

When to go

May, June, September or October. Everything heated stays heated, the coast is calmer and the rates are often better. This is not the lesser version of the trip

Two buildings, two completely different holidays, and the booking engine will not tell you which one you are choosing.

First, understand that there are essentially two different stays here

The booking engine will tell you square footage. It will not necessarily tell you that one room gives you coffee over the Mediterranean and another gives you a heated private pool surrounded by pines. Those are not minor variations. They are different vacations.

The Heritage Building is the original palace and the classic first-stay choice. For a couple, I would start with a Palace Sea-View Room and ask specifically about a terrace. At this hotel, I would rather have breakfast outside looking at the sea than another hundred square feet inside.

Les Terrasses du Cap is quieter, greener and more contemporary. I particularly like it for families or anyone prioritizing privacy and outdoor space. The Pool Terrace Suite has its own pool heated to 84°F, but the outlook is toward the pine grove rather than the big Mediterranean panorama. That is a wonderful trade if you picture afternoons around your own pool. It is the wrong one if you have been dreaming about waking up to cinematic sea views since February.

For larger families, I would compare the Penthouse and private villas before automatically booking several rooms. You get proper shared living space while keeping Four Seasons service, restaurants, spa and Club Dauphin behind you, which is my preferred version of renting a house. Nobody suddenly becomes responsible for breakfast.

Club Dauphin may dismantle your itinerary

A glass funicular takes you down the hillside to Club Dauphin, where a huge heated seawater infinity pool sits just above the Mediterranean. There are loungers, cabanas and lunch beside the water, and I would deliberately leave one full day blank for it rather than pretending you are only going down for an hour between sightseeing appointments.

One important distinction: this is not a sandy-beach resort. The coastline is rocky, with clear Mediterranean water and swimming coves. If your idea of the Riviera requires a proper sandy beach, I would compare it with Royal-Riviera before booking.

Club Dauphin can also welcome outside guests by reservation, so during July and August I would not casually assume your favorite cabana will still be waiting after breakfast. This is the Riviera. Other people have also had the idea.

I actually think the hotel gets more appealing outside peak summer

I would very happily stay here in May, June, September or October.

Club Dauphin is heated, the spa has an indoor pool, certain suites have heated private pools, and the tennis courts and coastal paths do not suddenly disappear because it is October. You can still have a very convincing Riviera vacation without competing for a cabana in peak-season heat.

The coast is calmer, rates can be more interesting, and the hotel still functions like a resort. This is not the lesser version of Cap-Ferrat. For plenty of travelers, I think it may be the smarter one.

The one group this is harder for is families tied to summer school holidays, which is its own booking conversation.

There is a walk right outside the hotel that you should know about

The Tour du Cap-Ferrat coastal path runs around the peninsula below the hotel, past rocky coves, the lighthouse and some of the prettiest Mediterranean scenery in the area. It is surprisingly easy to stay here and focus so completely on Club Dauphin that you miss what is literally outside the gates.

Bethenny Frankel apparently posted after a stay that she had not realized the coastal walks and swimming coves were essentially right there. I cannot verify what the concierge did or did not tell her, so I am not turning this into a Four Seasons controversy.

I am simply saying: ask about the walk.

You have traveled all the way to Cap-Ferrat. You should probably see Cap-Ferrat.

The spa deserves better than being your rainy-day backup

Le Spa has an indoor counter-current lap pool, hydrotherapy, steam, sauna and treatments with skincare partners including Biologique Recherche. There are also glass treatment cabanas in the gardens, an outdoor gym overlooking the sea, private yoga and Pilates, coached open-water swimming and coastal running.

This is another reason I like the hotel in shoulder season. A slightly cooler day can involve tennis in the morning, the coastal walk, a long lunch and the spa in the afternoon, which still sounds suspiciously like a very good French Riviera day.

The hotel also has two clay tennis courts, and private lessons can be arranged. If you care about tennis, I would organize it before arrival. There is no reason to discover at 8:45 a.m. that every other guest has also decided 9:00 a.m. tennis followed by Club Dauphin is the perfect day.

It also holds its own among the best hotel spas in France, which is a competitive category on this coast.

Tennis is another reason I like it

The hotel has two clay courts, one for general guest use and one at Villa Rose-Pierre, and private lessons can be arranged.

If tennis matters to you, tell me before the trip. This is the type of detail I want organized in advance, especially if you want a pro at a particular time of day. I would much rather reserve the court before arrival than discover that every other person at the hotel also thinks 9:00 a.m. tennis followed by Club Dauphin sounds ideal.

It is also surprisingly excellent with children

The Belle Époque façade does not exactly suggest an elaborate family program, which is part of why I like this hotel so much for families.

Four Seasons redesigned the Sea Explorers Kids Club in 2025, with outdoor space beneath the Mediterranean pines near Club Dauphin and programming built around play and adventure. The clever part is that none of this changes the character of the hotel. Adults still feel as though they are staying at one of the great Riviera palaces. Their children simply have somewhere considerably more entertaining to be while their parents finish lunch.

That is my preferred version of a family hotel. I do not want the entire property redesigned around children. I want the children genuinely happy while the hotel remains somewhere I would have chosen without them.

And if they are happily occupied for a few hours, parents can actually have lunch together rather than taking turns being off duty. At this stage of life, that feels fairly luxurious.

Who I would book here

I particularly like Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat for couples, families and multigenerational trips where the hotel itself is meant to be part of the vacation. It is also excellent for a first Riviera trip because Nice, Èze and Monaco are all easy without requiring you to change hotels every two days. I would choose somewhere else if a long sandy beach is non-negotiable, if you want to walk into a lively town every evening or if you intend to leave after breakfast and return at midnight. At these rates, you should actually be using Club Dauphin, the tennis courts, spa, coastal paths and grounds rather than simply paying to sleep above them.

And I would seriously consider coming outside peak summer. This is one of those rare Mediterranean resorts where a May, June, September or October stay does not feel like the lesser version. In many ways, it may be the smarter one.

Pairing Cap-Ferrat with the rest of France

Almost nobody flies to the South of France for Cap-Ferrat alone.

Further west along the coast, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the other beachfront Maison I compare most often.

Inland, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide is my first suggestion for the Provence half of a trip.

And for a few nights either side in Paris, Four Seasons Hotel George V is the easiest continuation if you are staying within the brand.

Is Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat worth visiting outside summer?

Absolutely. Club Dauphin’s outdoor seawater pool is heated and operates for a long season, while the hotel also has an indoor spa pool, heated private-pool suites, tennis, spa facilities and excellent coastal walking. Spring and fall can also bring more attractive Four Seasons offers than peak summer.

What is the best room at Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat?

For a couple on a first stay, I like a Palace Sea-View Room in the Heritage Building and would ask about a terrace. For privacy and your own heated pool, consider a Pool Terrace Suite. Larger families should compare the Penthouse and villas before simply booking multiple rooms.

I would compare the Penthouse and the three private villas before reserving several separate rooms. A villa gives you shared living space while keeping Four Seasons service, restaurants, spa and Club Dauphin available, and it usually works out better than splitting a family across a corridor.
